The hidden Jamaican Gem of KC: Sankofa Cafe

Last night I finally got the opportunity to try one of Shardae’s favorite spots. I absolutely love Jamaican food! Robust flavors, spice that isn’t overbearing, and savory sauces.

I digress.. Alright, Sankofa Cafe.

A small downtown Kansas City (KC) restaurant. Owned by a husband and wife that make you feel right at home.  We arrived around 9pm on a Saturday night.  There was reggae music playing loud enough to dance but reasonable so you can still have a conversation.

Drinks: I had the peach margarita on the rocks and Shardae ordered the island tea.

The margarita was good not to heavy on the syrup and had the right amount kick! Shardae really likes Long Island iced teas and variations of it. The island tea did not disappoint.

Sankofa has a small menu but it includes all the Jamaican favorites.

I ordered the brown stew chicken with cabbage and rice and peas. It came with an option of a roll or cornbread.

Shardae went with the curry chicken and same sides.

We also ordered a side of Plantains.

Everything was perfect. The chicken was fall off the bone. The sides were seasoned to perfection.  The cornbread was sweet and soft, like cake!

To kick it up a notch they have a Jamaican hot sauce. It adds that spicy heat you expect from island food while enhancing the flavor.

So to sum it up..

Cheap drinks, great food and unpretentious atmosphere! Love it!
